FireFighter  & Emergency Medical Technician – ATD

EMT and Firefighter Training in South Florida

The Broward Fire Academy offers Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and firefighter training programs for students preparing to enter emergency medical services, fire rescue, and public safety careers in Florida. Both programs combine instruction with practical training related to the responsibilities and working conditions of emergency responders.

Firefighter Program

The Firefighter program is a 492-hour program that meets the firefighter certification requirements established by the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training State Fire Marshal Office. The program includes the written and practical portions of the State Firefighters Certification Examinations.

Firefighter training combines instruction and field-related activities in:

• Ladder usage
• Hose layout
• Hazardous materials
• Extrication
• Breathing apparatus

Firefighter Applicant Requirements

Applicants to the Firefighter program must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Have a standard high school diploma from a regionally accredited institution or an accepted equivalent
• Have diplomas earned outside the United States evaluated by an accepted foreign transcript evaluation agency
• Take and pass the Basic Skills Tests unless exempt through a college diploma from a regionally accredited institution
• Hold a current BLS Healthcare Providers CPR and AED card
• Complete the entire hourly based program to receive the applicable Certificate of Completion or state license

Experiential credit does not apply. Enrollment is not open to high school students.

Firefighter Program Costs

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – ATD Program

The Emergency Medical Technician – ATD program prepares students to work as members of an emergency medical team. EMTs administer first aid treatment and help transport sick or injured people to a medical facility.

EMT training includes:

• Classroom theory
• Emergency room rotations
• Fire rescue ride time
• Equipment handling
• Designated tasks performed under hazardous and non-hazardous conditions

Students must meet with the program counselor and complete the required paperwork before registering for the EMT program.

EMT Applicant Requirements

Applicants to the Emergency Medical Technician – ATD program must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Have a high school diploma or GED
• Complete a physical examination
• Provide an immunization record
• Complete a drug screening through an approved vendor
• Pass a Level II background check through an approved vendor
• Take and pass the Basic Skills Tests unless exempt through a college diploma from a regionally accredited institution
• Complete the entire hourly based program to receive the applicable Certificate of Completion or state license

Additional fees associated with required medical screenings are non-refundable.

EMT Industry Certification

Students may prepare for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians certification.

EMT Program Costs

Fees are based on the number of class days according to the Broward County Public Schools calendar.  Tuition and fees are subject to change without notice.
